Throughout the month of February, thump will feature a selection of images from the Great Basin by local photographer, Zack Jones.  Please come in and check them out!

Tues. 2/14: Valentine’s Day
Bring in your sweetie or  someone you care about to enjoy some of our favorite Valentine seasonal drinks and eats, such as a Nutty Luv Latte, a Salted Carmelita Latte, or a traditional cappuccino, paired with an amazing 72% dark chocolate truffle!

Sat. 2/11–Sun. 2/19: Made from the HEART Valentines – From: YOU  To: THEM?
For the third year, we will provide materials for you to make a valentine for someone special. Look for bags on each table, full of fun paper, pens, scissors and tape. We may even make a space for you to hang your valentine for your beloved to retrieve on a special date with you! Please take home all valentines from thump by Sunday, February 19. Thanks!

Sun. 2/26, 1:30-2:30pm: Monthly Public Coffee Tasting
This fun, informal exploration of coffees from around the world, uses the tasting and evaluation techniques of professional coffee cuppers. Bring a friend and join us!

If you’ve never tried a traditional espresso drink – a doppio, macchiato or cappuccino – make sure to join us on Friday afternoons when we offer them for 50% off! It’s a great way to cap the week and roll into your Friday evening.

It’s Never too Late to Say, “Thank you!”
Thank you for giving from the heart in November and December to three locally based non-profit organizations that are near and dear to us at thump!

Many of you helped fill up the Operation Elf Box at the front of the shop to provide new toys for area kids in need.

Many of you purchased the Oregon Natural Desert Association’s 2012 landscape calendar at thump, and 100% of the proceeds went directly back to ONDA to help protect and preserve public lands East of the Cascades.

And many of you in December were taken by and purchased the amazing art and coffee mugs created by young Zambian orphans who live in the Vima Lupwa Home. 100% of the proceeds from your purchase will go directly to help offset the operational costs of running this non-denominational home, which serves some of Zambia’s neediest children. Most amazing is that this home was founded by Bend resident Malerie Pratt when she was only 19 years old!

Well, local artist and “Wishes” installation creator Mark Bernahl rotates the wishes every couple of months, adding new ones, removing old ones. He has kept every single wish that has been rotated out since the “Wishes” inception more than four years ago! And, he has scanned them! You can view more than 5,000 of them here. Some of the youngest artists ever to show at thump will be represented. The River Song  Montessori School student art show, “Vision of Peace” a collection of acrylic paintings created as part of an ongoing study of world peace leaders, will cover thump’s walls.  Also for First Friday ONLY, “The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama,” multi-media prints will also be on display in thump’s breezeway.

We’re thrilled to finally offer a single origin espresso that rivals Stumptown’s delicious Hair Bender espresso!  Hair Bender espresso is a blend of up to eight different coffee beans from origins around the world, whereas the Guatemala Finca el Injerto Single Origin Espresso uses coffee beans from just one coffee farm, Guatemala’s famed Finca el Injerto. Like Hair Bender espresso, Guatemal Finca el Injerto S.O.E. also has a roast profile that is carefully developed specifically for espresso brewing. Thump is now using this single origin espresso in all of our traditional espresso drinks: doppios, macchiatos and traditional cappuccinos. Throughout January, Thump Coffee in downtown Bend hosts the River Song Montessori School Student Art Show, “Vision of Peace.” For First Friday Art Walk, January 6 only, the school will also present “The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama,” multi-media prints.

The acrylics on canvas paintings displayed in “Vision of Peace” were painted by River Song children, ages three to six. These works were created as part of an ongoing study of world peace leaders including the Dalai Lama, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Maria Montessori. According to River Song, “This January show is in honor of our great peace ambassadors and their contribution toward justice and peace for humanity.”

The children’s art will be auctioned in February. Funds from the auction will contribute to the development of a scholarship fund for community families, an organic hot lunch program and classroom materials.

River Song purchased “The Missing Peace” prints with a goal of collaborating among local schools to develop a values-oriented curriculum for children ages 3-6 to accompany the artwork.

Through 12/20: Operation Elf Box?
Please consider dropping off new, unwrapped toys in the box at the front of the shop as a simple way to make a difference in a local child’s life this holiday. In its second year, Operation Elf Box works in collaboration with local non-profits such as Saving Grace, Bethlehem Inn, Kids Center and Mountain Star Relief Nursery to respectfully invite families in need to select toys for their children, while maintaining the participants’ anonymity. ART: Ongoing “Sharing The Road” Poster Series Display
The “Sharing the Road” poster series depicts what drivers and cyclists can do to avoid accidents. A $5000 grant was awarded to the Bend Metropolitan Planning Organization to inform cyclists and drivers and help prevent crashes on our roads. City of Bend, citizens, advocates and employees worked as a group to get bike riders asking: “Am I doing this right?” and “Is this safe?” and “What are the rules?” The Posters  to Coasters campaign, designed by Carrrrrlos, does that in a visually striking way.  The campaign consists of posters, coasters and video. The prominent concerns with riding a bike in Bend are wrong way riding, drunk riding and night riding without lights. These actions cause the most cycling injuries and fatalities nationwide.

Join us this Friday, October 28, 5-9pm for Cross Culture Caminata Art Walk, a Day of the Dead inspired celebration of bicycles, art and culture, featuring art works by Andrew Steiner, Tara Doherty and live DJ music by bPollen and thump. Our weekly Friday Traditional Cappuccino Happy Hour will extend throughout the evening. Enjoy 1/2 off on all traditional espresso drinks!

With a nod to the traditional altars of Dia de los Muertos, selected local artists will be installing interpretive pieces throughout downtown Bend businesses. This special art walk is part of a three-day-long Day of the Dead Cyclocross Festival, including cyclocross bike races in the Old Mill District, Cross Culture Caminata Art Walk in downtown Bend and the Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show. Artworks will stay up in participating businesses through Halloween day before being relocated to Arts Central for exhibit from November 1-28.

Her show — entitled “being. small. simple. green.” — is inspired by months spent in the green, wet forest of Tennessee and incorporates acrylics, photos, drawings, handmade paper, wood, canvas and board.

Thump welcomes the Cross Culture Caminata, a Day of the Dead inspired celebration of bicycles, art and culture, featuring live DJ music by bPollen.  According to organizers, downtown Bend’s Cross Culture Caminata is “part art walk, part pub crawl, part street parade inspired by Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).” Maps will be available throughout downtown and will provide information about artists, as well as additional street festivities.

Fri. 9/2, OPEN LATE: First Friday Art Walk & Master’s Road Cycling National Championship Downtown Criterium
We’ll be open late to watch the US Master’s Road Cycling National Championship competitors lap downtown – from 8am-8pm! For First Friday Art Walk, we will feature the mixed media work of artist, designer and activist Euijin Gray. Find Your Wish on Flickr
The wooden planks swaying from thump’s ceiling capturing brief wishes from passersby, are as much of what makes thump, thump as any delicious drinks we serve. Have you ever wondered what happens to those wishes or how many have been created? Well, local artist and “Wishes” installation creator Mark Bernahl rotates the wishes every couple of months, adding new ones, removing old ones. He has kept every single wish that has been rotated out since the “Wishes” inception more than four years ago! And, he has scanned them! You can view more than 5,000 of them here. If you wrote a wish sometime in the last four years, go to our Flickr site and see if you can find it. Over 5,000 and counting are on the site! And . . . let us know if your wish came true!

ART: Ongoing “Sharing The Road” Poster Series Display
The “Sharing the Road” poster series depicts what drivers and cyclists can do to avoid accidents. A $5000 grant was awarded to the Bend Metropolitan Planning Organization to inform cyclists and drivers and help prevent crashes on our roads. City of Bend, citizens, advocates and employees worked as a group to get bike riders asking: “Am I doing this right?” and “Is this safe?” and “What are the rules?” The Posters  to Coasters campaign, designed by Carrrrrlos, does that in a visually striking way.  The campaign consists of posters, coasters and video. The prominent concerns with riding a bike in Bend are wrong way riding, drunk riding and night riding without lights. These actions cause the most cycling injuries and fatalities nationwide.
